Dance Base Yokohama

Dance Base Yokohama

Kemono L.Riot / DNA Method Workshop & Showing

◆Outline

Based in Scotland, Kemono is a choreographer, dancer, and academic artist specializing in freestyle hip-hop and Krump.
This practice blends the African diaspora movement, contemporary street dance, music, and cultural leadership.
Kemono uses its own DNA Method—comprising the three pillars of Discovering, Navigating, and Assembling the Body—to construct physical language.

During my stay in Japan, I will engage in activities aimed at exploring how my own body language functions within an international context through interactions with numerous artists and local residents.
To that end, during our stay, we plan to hold not only performances but also workshops and networking events for dancers from diverse backgrounds, as well as workshops open to everyone.
We hope you’ll join us.

This project is being held as part of an exchange program between Dance Base Scotland and Dance Base Yokohama that began in 2024.

◆② Krump Workshop & Artist Meet-and-Greet [For Professionals]

Tuesday, October 20, 1:00–3:00 p.m.

This session focuses on the human body and “patterns.” Patterns are what keep us safe. The unknown not only brings fear but also triggers reactions of rejection and denial.
In this session, we will explore movement patterns and practice breaking free from them.
We will also discuss character work and “vulnerability.” Vulnerability is our richest resource as human beings.
How can we transform that vulnerability into an expression that fits within the “vessel” of art?

This workshop aims to conduct movement research with participants and to exchange ideas through dialogue.

Target Audience: Professional dancers or dancers aspiring to become professionals / Those capable of improvisational dance
*Experience in hip-hop dance is not required
Fee: Free (Registration required)
Please register using this form
*Conducted in English; interpretation provided

◆③ Showing & Presentation

Thursday, October 22, 7:00 PM (Doors open 15 minutes prior)

At the conclusion of the residency, we will share the results through a performance.Kemono will create music incorporating insights gained and sounds discovered during their stay in Japan, and will perform a piece tailored to those sounds. Additionally, a Q&A session will be held after the performance.
