Dance x Cello Triple Bill / Mami Shimazaki x Akane Kurisaki x Udai Shika x Moto Takahashi
Date: 2024/8/19 (Monday)
Venue: Dance Base Yokohama
This is a collaboration of choreographers, dancers, and cellists who met at DaBY. The triple bill will include two new and two old works choreographed by Mami Shimazaki, both of which will be premiered in Japan, and the first work by the unit “Motoshika” formed this year by Udai Shika and Moto Takahashi. Please look forward to seeing what kind of works will be created through the collaboration of artists from different genres, accompanied by live cello music.
◆ “Loop People 2024”.
This duo work, first performed in 2011, consists of dance by Mami Shimazaki and live performance by Ran Nahmias on the electronic cello. The duo extracts repetitive everyday behavior, individual habits, and behavior patterns, and creates a unique space that moves between the “abstract” and the “concrete” through a dialogue between the movements created based on these patterns and the live sound of the electronic cello.
This time, it will be performed as a trio incorporating a new approach and physicality, with DaBY dancer-in-residence Akane Kuri and cellist and DaBY guest artist Udai Shika. (Japan premiere)
Choreography: Mami Shimazaki
Dance: Akmane Kuri (DaBY resident dancer), Mami Shimazaki
Cello: Udai Shika (DaBY Guest Artist)
◆ “Showa Nowa”.
It consists of three parts: “Showa,” “IMA,” and “Nowa.” The film depicts a woman who grows up from a young girl and departs, confronting the fragility of life in a chaotic situation over time, and losing herself in the flow of vague memories and various overlapping emotions. Finally, they try to figure out what they can do in the place they have arrived. This is an autobiographical solo work by Mami Shimazaki, who was born in the Showa period (1926-1989), and the complete version is being performed for the first time in Japan.

◆『カンナ』
Motoshika” is a unit formed by choreographer/dancer Mototo Takahashi and cellist Udai Shike after meeting in New York in 2024. The two, who traverse the boundaries between genres, weave their unique world in a well-honed minimalist composition that can be staged anywhere in the world. This is their first work as a unit.
Canna, a very tough flower that blooms without withering in the blazing sun at the height of summer. The genus Canna belongs only to the family Cannaceae, and has no other companions. The language of flowers is “passion,” “delusion,” “solid end,” and “eternity.
I found an interesting story while researching canna.
~Legend of Buddha and Kanna
One day, a demon, jealous of Buddha’s tremendously strong spiritual power, ambushed Buddha and threw a large rock at him.
However, the rock did not hit the Buddha’s body and broke into pieces at his feet.
It is said that only one piece of the rock hit the Buddha’s toe, and the blood that flowed from it seeped into the earth, from where a red flower, canna, bloomed.
It is said that the demon who threw the rock at him was touched by the wrath of the earth and was swallowed by the cracks in the earth.

Canna is also said to be the flower of peace and hope.
This is a “traveling work of art,” and their never-ending journey begins now.
