Israel Galvin, whose innovative performances easily transcend genres, will return to Japan with Igor Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring.
Choreographed by Václav Nijinsky of the Ballets Russes in 1913, “The Rite of Spring” caused a sensation among Parisians as soon as it was performed. Since then, many choreographers have attempted to adapt the work to dance, but Galvin, known as the Nijinsky of flamenco, has created a masterpiece that goes to the root of Stravinsky’s music with ideas completely different from those of masters such as Pina Bausch and Maurice Béjart.
The enchanting sounds of the two-piano version of “The Rite of Spring” performed by up-and-coming Japanese pianists Hiiragi Katayama and Tatsuto Masuda, who will replace two performers who were unable to come to Japan from the United States at short notice, will be combined with Galvin’s dance, in which the body is manipulated like a musical instrument, to depict a magnificent story.
