Fumiya Otonashi is a performer of shō, a traditional Japanese instrument used in Gagaku, the ancient court music of Japan. He first encountered Gagaku during his studies in computer music, which led him to pursue formal training under Hideaki Bunno, former Chief Court Musician of the Imperial Household Agency. In 2015, he co-founded Kabuchoka Fuyugekkyo Gagaku Ensemble, a contemporary group reimagining tradition with elegance and playfulness, offering fresh, imaginative interpretations.
Alongside his work in Gagaku, he explores new contexts and possibilities for the shō and Gagaku through contemporary projects, including Tim Hecker’s world tours, Shuta Hasunuma Philharmonic Orchestra, and intercultural
collaborations such as Persian music and Khmer dance. His diverse body of work spans improvisation, film, installation art, contemporary dance, music for public spaces, video games, and television—including the Emmy-winning series Shōgun.
