Dance Base Yokohama

Dance Base Yokohama

Odette Picaud

In my workshop I have accumulated many dolls of all kinds from all ages, discarded or entrusted to me. To give them new stories to tell, I take them apart, whittle them down, sew them together, bind them, cover them with old fabrics and laces, and decorate them with lovingly acquired objects. Through a long process of hand-stitching, these discarded dolls are reborn as benevolent object gods, hybrid and strange characters. Relics and pagan banners of common memory can move, unsettle, make people laugh, or worry, depending on their own histories. My work is also about motherhood and childhood, as well as life, death, and healing.
