Graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts, Department of Music.
After moving to the U.S. in 1988, he began writing a regular column on arts and culture and performing arts criticism for the Asahi Shimbun and many other print media.
Since 2003, he has been the Director of the Performing Arts Department at the Japan Society (JS), and in 2006 he became the Artistic Director overseeing the performing arts and film divisions.
Since then, in addition to organizing performances of Japanese performing arts at JS theaters, he has produced North American tours, commissioned new works from non-Japanese artists, and launched new projects such as an English-language reading series of contemporary plays. He has served as a juror for various awards and grant programs in the performing arts, including the Rockefeller Foundation MAP Grant, the New York Bessie Award, the Rolex Mentor & Protégé Arts, and the Herb Alpert Arts Award.
He was awarded the 2019 Bessie Award for "Outstanding In 2023, he will receive the "Order of Cultural Exchange" from the Ministry of Culture of Taiwan, and in 2024, he will receive the Commendation from the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan.
