Enka Kobayashi / Dance Workshop
A dance workshop will be held by Enka Kobayashi, a member of the Centre Choreographique National de Lillieu-la-Pape (CCNR) in France, who has worked for many years with the Israeli choreographer Yuval Pick, the director of the CCNR.
The two-day event will include a class on “Practice,” a method developed by Yuval Pick, and a repertory class on “Vocabulary of need,” a choreographic work by Mr. Pick. Those who are interested in Yuval Pick’s works and his method, which are hard to encounter in Japan, are welcome to come!

◆About the Choreographer
Born in Israel in 1970, she joined the Batsheva Dance Company and the Ballet National de l’Opera de Lyon in the 1990s, collaborating with prominent choreographers such as Ohad Naharin, Tero Sallinen, and Russell Maliphant.
In 2011, he became the director of the Liliu La Pape National Choreographic Center, where he continues to work actively.

The Practice is designed to further enrich the dancer’s skills through precise exercises and imaginative improvisations based on the following five fundamentals
- Body Rotation
- Weight shift and recoil
- Movement from the center of the body to the periphery
- The space in between, which is felt as a sense of play.
- Each movement is an action that comes from an expression of intention.
The class will be based on the choreography “Vocabulary of need” by Yuval Pick.
The work is a dialogue between the rhythmic melody of Bach’s “Partita in D minor” BWV 1004 and the orchestral body language between the eight dancers.
Music and sound are fundamental sources of inspiration in my work. I am interested in exploring the relationship that emerges between music and the rhythms of movement. How do they reveal each other? How do they deconstruct and reconstruct space? And how is it embodied? How does their interaction reveal the human being?
Concurrent with this research, I am also studying the relationship between the individual and the collective. How does an ensemble of unique “individuals” bring a shared space to life? What rituals can be considered to enhance a sense of belonging?
In this work, I am confronted with one of the masterpieces of music history, Bach’s “Partita
in D minor” BWV 1004. When I heard this universal and timeless piece, I was moved and inspired by its emotional power. As a contemporary artist and choreographer, I want to offer dancers and audiences an encounter with this music. I want to offer them the opportunity to connect with something bigger, something spiritual.”

She began studying ballet as a child at the Showa Music and Arts Academy, where she studied mainly with Carlos Valcarcel and Sakiko Arai. After studying at the Rambert School in England, she participated in the works and creations of choreographers such as Kerry Nicholls and Tiia Ourila and the Impermanence Dance Theatre.
Since 2011, as a member of the Centre Choreographique National de France (CCN) in Lully-la-Pape, Lyon, she has been performing in the works of Yuval Pick, director and choreographer of CCN, touring throughout Europe and Asia, and giving classes and workshops around the Practice She also conducts classes and workshops around the world, focusing on the Practice method developed by Yuval Pick.
