Israel Galvin, who has overwhelmed audiences with his innovative performances that easily transcend genres, will return to Japan with Igor Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring.
In 1913 Choreographed by Václav Nijinsky of the Ballets Russes, “The Rite of Spring” caused a sensation among Parisians when it was first performed. Since then, many choreographers have attempted to adapt the work to dance, but Galvin, known as the Nijinsky of flamenco, has created a masterpiece that approaches the roots of Stravinsky’s music with ideas completely different from those of masters such as Pina Bausch and Maurice Béjart.
The enchanting sounds of the two-piano version of “The Rite of Spring” performed by up-and-coming Japanese pianists Hiiragi Katayama and Tatsuto Masuda, who will replace two performers who were unable to come to Japan from the U.S. on short notice, will be combined with Galvin’s dance, which manipulates the body like a musical instrument, to depict a magnificent story.
