A debriefing session and mini-workshop will be held by DaBY resident artist Naoyuki Sakai.

Dance artist Naoyuki Sakai stayed in Bassano del Grappa, Italy for about a year as part of the Agency for Cultural Affairs’ Overseas Study Program for Emerging Artists. He will give a presentation on the artistic environment surrounding Bassano del Grappa, focusing on “Dance Well” and the “Opera Estarte” festival, which is held every summer and is one of the largest festivals in Europe.

The presentation will be followed by a dance workshop using elements of Dance Well, which has been held in Bassano since 2013. Dance Well is an artistic activity with people living with Parkinson’s disease. In this special edition, in about 30 minutes, we will share with you the elements of dance work using the artistic space and imagery of “Dance Well”.

On November 4, there will be a one-hour “Dance Well” workshop.

What is Dance Well?

Dance Well is a dance activity open to everyone, regardless of age or experience, from children to adults, including those living with Parkinson’s disease. It is organized by the CSC Contemporary Theater Center of Bassano del Grappa, Italy, and has been running since 2013.

A key feature of Dance Well is that it is conducted as an artistic activity, rather than for the purpose of rehabilitation or learning dance skills. The event is held in an environment that stimulates the senses, such as the grounds of an art museum where art works are installed, an art gallery, or outdoors where one can experience the seasons. We attempt from an artistic approach to recognize the unique expressions and diverse values that emerge when participants free their bodies and minds.

Dancer and filmmaker. Graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts. She went to Italy as a trainee under the Agency for Cultural Affairs’ Overseas Study Program for Emerging Artists. Instructor of “Dance Well,” an artistic activity with people living with Parkinson’s disease.

In addition to numerous stage performances in Japan, Europe, the Middle East, and Asian countries, he has appeared in media such as Nanana Mori’s music videos and provided choreography. Based in Kasukabe City, she is involved in community development activities through the arts.
