Open Lab Vol. 1″ is a talk event in which dancers introduce their own activities in their own language. In order to explore the reality of diverse dance activities, we will explore what dancers are actually doing through talks, videos, and actual movements. This time, we will talk with guest Kosuke Yamamoto about the beauty of British ballet, the significance of contemporary in ballet companies, and second careers for dancers.

Kosuke Yamamoto


In 1996, at the young age of 13, she won the Special Jury Prize at the Nagoya World Ballet and Modern Dance Competition and the Nijinsky Prize from the Polish National Opera Theatre. 1998 entered the Royal Ballet School in England. In 2000, she joined the Birmingham Royal Ballet. Since returning to Japan in 2010, she has worked as a dancer, director, and teacher, and has appeared as a commentator on “Premium Café” (NHK) and “Prix de Lausanne” (NHK). Her first book “The World of British Ballet” was published this year.

Graduated from the Department of Dance Education, Faculty of Letters and Education, Ochanomizu University, and completed the Graduate School of Humanities and Sciences of the same university. After working on stage, she worked at Aichi Arts Center as Japan’s first dance curator since 1993, won the 1st Asahi Arts Award in 2000 at her organization, Aichi Culture and Information Center, and has been in her current position since 2002. He has produced and invited more than 200 works and projects ranging from large-scale international co-productions to experimental performances. He has served as a member of the Cultural Policy Subcommittee of the Cultural Affairs Council of the Agency for Cultural Affairs, coordinator of the National Association of Public Cultural Facilities, jury member of corporate arts and culture foundations, board member and other various committees, jury member of dance competitions, chairman of the executive committee of the 65th Annual Conference of the Japan Society of Dance Performance, and part-time university lecturer. In 1999, he won the Prix de Lausanne International Ballet Competition. He was the first Japanese male dancer to join the Netherlands Dance Theater I.
