◆Lecturer Profile
Teita Iwabuchi
Teita Iwabuchi
(DaBY Choreographer in Residence)
DaBY Resident Artist
Iwabuchi majored in theater at Tamagawa University while studying traditional Japanese dance and butoh in parallel. Appeared in butoh performances by Koh Murobushi from 2007 to 2015 and was influenced by his work. In 2005, he began to present original works that focused on “the structure of the body” and “the interplay between space, music, and the body.” Since 2010, he has been working with musicians to perform collaborative works on the relationship between body and music. In 2012, he received the French Embassy Prize for Young Choreographer Award at the Yokohama Dance Collection EX2012 for his work Hetero (co-choreographed by Kaori Seki) and was in residence at Centre National de Danse Contemporaine (CNDC). Inspired by biology and neuroscience and rooted in butoh and material arts, Iwabuchi developed the expressive methodology he calls the matrixed body which taps into a characteristically Japanese physique and sensitivity. Part-time lecturer at Tamagawa University. Resident artist at Steep Slope Studio.
