Reconsideration and Revision of Web Postings Based on the Museum’s Statement
Dance Base Yokohama (DaBY) is temporarily suspending the “Shalom” trilogy showing choreographed by Chiaki Hotta and related workshops currently posted on the website. The information is temporarily suspended due to a review of the content.
After the publication of this project, we received concerns that the title and the wording of the introduction may affirm and contribute to the ongoing human rights violations and occupation in Palestine as “normalization”. In response, DaBY and the artists held a renewed dialogue.
The Museum is in the position of providing space for diverse artists to express themselves, and the views expressed in individual works and activities do not necessarily represent the official views of the institution.
On the other hand, the Museum will not be complicit in any project that would overlook human rights abuses such as occupation and apartheid as “normal cultural exchange. Furthermore, the Museum does not receive any support or sponsorship for propaganda purposes from any state institution.
Based on the above stance, we have confirmed through fact-finding and dialogue with the artist that this project was not planned with the intention of overlooking the asymmetry of the occupation.
However, after re-examining the meaning and weight of the Hebrew word “Shalom” in the current international context, as well as the lack of critical perspective in the introduction, we have determined that it is not appropriate to continue publishing the article in its current form.
Therefore, we are withdrawing the page until the title and text have been revised to more accurately convey the artist’s intentions.
After re-posting, we will make it clear that this project is an independent place (space use) by the artist, and as a space provider, we will observe the creative process.
In the future, we will clarify more clearly the distinction between organized projects and space provision on the website, and will carefully face the issue of how to create a place for expression together with artists.
