Jo Kanamori (Director, choreographer, dancer)

Artistic director of the dance department of Ryutopia Niigata Citizen’s Arts Center and artistic director of Noism Company Niigata.

Studied under Maurice Béjart and others at Rudra Béjart Lausanne.

He made his debut as a director and choreographer while a member of Nederland Dance Theater II. He has since worked as a dancer and choreographer for the Ballet de l’Opera de Lyon, the Gothenburg Ballet, and others.

He returned to Japan in 2002 and became the Artistic Director of the Dance Department of Niigata Citizen’s Arts Center in April 2004.

He established Noism, Japan’s first dance company exclusively dedicated to public theaters, and his works have been highly acclaimed both domestically and internationally in various fields.

He has received numerous awards, including the 2007 Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s Art Encouragement Prize.
