Dance Base Yokohama has launched a project “Dance Accessibility Lab: A New Way of Enjoying Dance with People with Visual Impairment Dance Base Yokohama has launched a project “Labo for Dance Accessibility – Dance Appreciation with the Visually Impaired” to explore new ways of appreciating dance for the visually impaired and the visually impaired.
While one of the attractions of dance is that it can be viewed in a variety of ways, it is often perceived as “difficult to understand,” and the hurdles to viewing dance are often high. In this project, visually impaired people will watch dance works newly created by choreographers and dancers with narration by critics, poets, aesthetes, and interpreters (interpreters) who are professionals in “communicating with words”. Through the dialogue that takes place, participants will not only learn “what kind of support is necessary for dance appreciation,” but also discover new possibilities for dance from the perspective of the visually impaired, “what dance appreciation is all about. Furthermore, we expect that choreographers, dancers, and producers will gain an inclusive perspective, develop new dance expression, and expand the possibilities of their works.
The workshop at DaBY will be documented in a documentary video, which will be distributed in February 2021 on “THEATRE for ALL,” a barrier-free platform project developed by precog, Inc. as part of the “Cultural Arts Profitability Enhancement Project” by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. Please look forward to it.
Dance Base Yokohama (DaBY) Statements
DaBY opened in June 2020 with the aim of becoming a platform for opening up dance to society. DaBY has launched a variety of activities to increase accessibility to people who have had difficulty accessing dance and to increase the number of dance viewers.
In this project, we feel that we have the potential to overturn the stereotypes associated with difficulties in “watching dance” through our attempts to “watch dance” with visually impaired people. We hope that by sharing our experiences with each other, we will be able to notice new sensations and appreciate dance more deeply than ever before.
