A special workshop by DaBY resident artist Shintaro Hirahara will share dance theater and contact techniques and explore how to connect them to the creative process.
Improvement of dance technique with tactile sensitivity
Application of Theater Techniques with Visual
Discovering Verbal Techniques with Language Using the Linguistic Field
An introspective perspective as a basis for creation that originates from oneself.
Focusing on the above four points, the goal is to make this a time to become able to translate tactile, visual, verbal, and memory into dance with clarity.
Comment from Instructor:
What you will learn on January 5 and 6 is not the facts as researched by various research institutes and consolidated by experts, but rather, it is more viscous and based on personal experiences from personal practice and personal interpretations based on reading various dance literature. We recommend that you attend the workshop with this in mind.
We would like each home to bring some objects or books.
It could be clothes, an instrument you no longer use, a letter you can’t throw away, whatever it is.
And I want you to go and sort out a few memories about it.
I don’t know if it will actually be used for showing, but I would like to start with that as a clue. (Hirahara)

Overview
Guest instructor Yoshiko Oiwa, a dancer and craniosacral therapist, will lead a two-week workshop. The first week will be “Self-Healing” and the second week will be “Kata and No Kata” focusing on yoga and instant composition (solo improvisation).
Thursday, February 2
Healing Workshop
We will analyze the mechanisms of the body and mind based on our experience and knowledge gained from craniosacral and Noguchi Seitai regarding the regeneration of an imbalanced body. It is not only the body that dances, but also the presence of more than just the body, a proposal that will lead to the realization of what really strikes one’s heart for the dancers who perform. Participants will do self-healing work on a mat and hands-on healing work with a partner.
What to bring: Please think of your own device to lie on your back comfortably on a hard floor for about 30 minutes and bring it with you.
Thursday, February 9
Kata and Kata-less Dance Workshop
The first half of this two-part dance workshop will use kata (yoga, ballet techniques, etc.) to prepare the body for dancing. The first half of the workshop will use Kata (yoga, ballet techniques, etc.) to prepare the body for dancing, and the second half will use craniosacral body awareness to prepare the body for dancing freely, in order to feel muscles, skeleton, spinal fluid, and chi more subtly.
The second half, “Kata No Kata,” is a work in which solo improvisation is practiced from various angles. At the end, a short solo is assembled through improvisation.
Eligibility: Students who have been exploring the body for at least 3 years.
