Toran Ame & Joanna Rosenfeld / Workshop & Showing
Since becoming independent from Dairakudakan in 2019, the 2023 Open Call Residency Artist, Ame Toranan, has actively formed international connections while managing the domestic collective “Sanzen CAMP”.
As a result of the collaboration in Butoh Lab Camp 2023, in which she participated as an instructor, Joanna Rosenfeld, who is active in physical theater in the U.K., has been invited to Dance Base Yokohama for a workshop, creation of collaborative work, and tryout of a new work. The program will be performed at Dance Base Yokohama. In this cross-border exchange with artists from other countries, we aim to understand each other’s techniques and philosophies underlying the creation of works, to promote mutual understanding, and to create new cultural values.
The workshop will be divided into two parts: the Butoh class will share the Butoh method that Ame has developed over the past 11 years with Dairakudama, as well as his own Butoh technique “Multi Layered Body,” and the Contact lmprovisation class will share the body method that Rosenfeld has been teaching abroad for more than 20 years. Rosenfeld has been teaching the body method for more than 20 years abroad. In the “Luminous ashes” tryout, Rosenfeld, who has been in Japan for less than a week, will collaborate with Adame on a creation during this period.
What is Multi Layered Body?
Multi Layered Body (MLB) is a Butoh technique based on phenomenological and sculptural perspectives developed by Toranan Ame from her own roots. This is the first workshop under the title of MLB, and through creation and showing, it will be derived as a concept with a sense of reality, and will continue to change its form. We will not assume the whole picture in advance, but rather adopt a method of creation that captures and expands on the signs that occur there.
In MLB’s workshops and creations, we attempt to transform the state, texture, and mass of the body (mass, form, movement), space, and time from each motif. Through a meticulous transition between the dimensions of the everyday and the extraordinary, the mold and the time of internal combustion, I would like to establish the state as a layer of sedimentation to the level of phenomena.
The concept of MLB as it exists today is not yet complete, and it is safe to say that it is a living concept. It is a butoh technique to describe the world from different perspectives, with a structure that evolves through a process and finds new perspectives.
In terms of the sculptural perspective, we will focus on the main techniques of modeling and carving, and attempt to approach each technique itself from the perspective of dance, which seems to be the opposite of fleshing out or carving out a movement.

Performance and theater maker/director/performer/dancer/artist/body researcher; artistic director of AboutFace Theatre Company and One Fell Swoop Project; member of Waken, JFAY, Authentic Artist Member of the Collective. He has been an instructor at the Academy of Creative Training for over 20 years. Her work focuses on memory, the passage of time, death, grief, the environment, and our relationship to these concepts, starting with autobiographical material through her own body of work and expanding it into a collective exploration. Interested in the transformative and non-hierarchical process of my work in both solo and collaborative settings.
