Niki Verrall & Texas Nixon-Kain, “Phenomenal Probe,” Showing

We are pleased to announce that the Niki Verrall & Texas Nixon-Kain “Phenomenal Probe” show, originally scheduled for Saturday, March 9, but cancelled due to the artist’s illness, will be held again.
This will be an opportunity for those of you who have been looking forward to seeing the show to see it again. Please look forward to it!

Date: 2025/5/4(Sun) 14:00~
Venue: Dance Base Yokohama

Phenomenal Probe is inspired by the book Archaeologies of Presence by Gabriella Giannachi, Nick Kaye, and Michael Shanks, and builds on the concepts explored therein. The project is based on concepts explored in the book Archaeologies of Presence by Nick Kaye and Michael Shanks. The project will simultaneously explore natural phenomena and “phenomena of presence” through the context of a live performance piece in progress.

Niki and Texas are interested in the context of how these phenomena are born, what circumstances in our environment, ourselves, and society cause them to break down and create effective and temporary events. The events can disappear in an instant or be replaced by new ones. In Phenomenal Probe, I will question and understand the fluid layers that oscillate between the two phenomena and explore how they can be expressed as “presence” in a live performance.

◆Artist Message

In this showing, you will see the early stages of a new work, Phenomenal Probe, that we worked on during our two-week residency at DaBY. We will be presenting the first 20 minutes from the feature film, which will be completed in late 2025.

We came to the residency with many ideas, but we felt that they were expanded and enriched by the diverse possibilities offered by the DaBY space. Within the limited time of our residency, we sought to maximize the blessings of this spacious studio while focusing on place and temporality. This approach naturally connected with our exploration of how phenomena emerge in their surroundings, and how transient and changeable they can be.

This work is an attempt to sublimate both “phenomena” and “phenomena of existence” into physical expression, focusing on the ever-changing processuality and its overlap. It also encompasses a relationship with the past, and what it carries with it changes into a different form each time it is performed. We will engage in a dialogue with the performance, and by releasing it once, we will prepare for it to be reconstituted at the next performance.

We would be happy to hear what kind of scenery you saw and what kind of sensations you received in this short presentation.

We would like to thank Dance Base Yokohama and the Ian Potter Cultural Trust of Australia for their support of this creative endeavor. We would also like to express our deepest gratitude once again to all those who had made reservations for the performance scheduled in March, and we are very happy that the warm cooperation of the DaBY team has made this postponed performance possible.

I look forward to seeing all of you this time around with all of us in good health! 🙂
