[YPAM Joint Project] DaBY Dance Days 2027
DaBY Dance Days 2027 (DDD2027)
Fri., February 5 – Sun., February 14, 2027 Dance Base Yokohama
Yokohama International Performing Arts Meeting 2027 (YPAM2027) Joint Project
Since its opening in 2020, Dance Base Yokohama (DaBY) has served as a creative hub for dance, taking on everything from supporting artists’ creative processes to presenting works in Japan and abroad and collaborating with the local community. Today, new creations, residencies, co-productions with cultural institutions in Japan and overseas, and workshops open to the local community are always under way at the facility, which functions as a platform where diverse dance-related activities intersect.
“DaBY Dance Days” is an annual festival that opens up a full year of DaBY’s activities all at once. Its first edition, in 2027, will be held as a Joint Project of the Yokohama International Performing Arts Meeting 2027 (YPAM2027), which brings together performing arts professionals from Japan and around the world.
The program is built around DaBY’s five areas of activity.
Wings / Production
To date, DaBY has produced around 20 works in collaboration with artists.
In 2024, DaBY launched “Wings”: International Dance Project by Dance Base Yokohama for Emerging Creators and is creating new works with six artists and groups. Supported by the Japan Creator Support Fund, the project aims to enhance the international presence of Japanese creators by nurturing leading Japanese artists, producers, dramaturgs and critics, presenting their works overseas, and creating further opportunities for restaging.
Residency
Since its opening, DaBY has supported artists’ and creators’ creative processes by providing studio space free of charge. Since 2024, it has run an annual open-call residency program for artists from Japan and abroad. Placing importance on an environment where artists can devote time to the creative process itself without rushing to finish a work, the program supports two to three weeks of creation. Since 2025, the 1F studio has been added as a venue for the program, allowing activities that are more closely connected with the local community in a space with everyday foot traffic.
Co-production
Dance Base Yokohama has co-produced works with Aichi Prefectural Art Theater through a public-private partnership. Works created at DaBY premiere at Aichi Prefectural Art Theater and are then restaged in partnership with theaters and festivals in Japan and abroad, with the aim of creating a sustainable cycle. In 2024, Constellation ~ Connecting Worlds with Aichi Prefectural Art Theater Dance Project ~ was launched, and four works have been created and performed as DaBY co-productions.
Community
Since a new studio opened on the 1st floor of the same building in August 2025, DaBY has regularly held open classes for the local community. Current classes include “Dance Well,” “Open Dance Salon,” “Kid’s Dance Salon,” “Yurujiwa Exercises,” “Body Research Practice Sessions,” and the reading course “Reading the Tao Te Ching through the Body.” Anyone is welcome to join, regardless of dance experience.
Archive / Networking
The archive area is lined with books on the performing arts. Visitors are welcome to drop in and browse them whenever DaBY is open.
You can also trace DaBY’s history through posters, annual reports and programs from past productions.
Beyond watching the works themselves, visitors can see where these works come from, and what systems and human connections give rise to them. We look forward to welcoming dance professionals and everyone with an interest in dance.
