Masayuki Suga / asamicro / Kim Ga-woon, “How We Dance In / Out of Painting?”
Masayuki Suga, asamicro, and Kim Ga-woon will participate in a residency at Dance Base Yokohama from Thursday, July 2, 2026, to Saturday, July 25, 2026. Taking the mural “People Who Paint Dreams,” installed in Kanagawa Park, as their starting point, they will explore the intersection of painting and physical expression. In this performance, as the outcome of their research during the residency, they will present a performance that explores the interplay between the bodies that emerge in front of the mural and the local context embedded within the painting.
◆Outline
This project is an attempt to embody the mural “People Painting Dreams,” installed in Kanagawa Park, as a choreographic score. Furthermore, building on the one-to-one relationship between the painting and the body, we seek to represent not only the mural’s location—Kanagawa Park—but also the sentiments that the people who gather there imbue in the mural.
For eight years, this 68.5-meter-long metal wall has stood as a place of respite for the community. The wish that artist Kim Ga-woon imbued in this mural—”May this place continue to be a place of respite for the people of this city”—spreads both inward and outward, taking on various forms.
Taking this mural—which captures the thoughts and feelings of the town’s residents—as a starting point, we interweave the movements of asamicro, who views hip-hop dance as a “proof of one’s existence.”Coincidentally, the act of “painting on a wall” is also one of the elements of hip-hop. We will run the acts of painting and dancing—which manifest as forms of prayer—in parallel, exploring the performance that emerges from their collision and dialogue.

asamicroDancer, choreographer, and founder of egglife. Drawing on the hip-hop dance skills she has cultivated since the age of 10, she creates sharp movements and highly addictive choreography. Under the concept of “Creating Anticipation for Tomorrow Morning,” she expresses her own memories and the indescribable difficulties of life through humorous movements and a sense of speed. Her themes revolve around “the distance between family, society, and the self.” In recent years, she has also developed an interest in the impact that space has on the mind and body, leading her to create behavioral performances centered on food. Through homemade red bean paste and jams, she explores “comfortable and uncomfortable environments” from multiple angles, fostering participants’ decision-making skills and self-esteem. |
