Dance Base Yokohama is pleased to present two showings by Naoyuki Sakai and Taku Yoshida, both of whom have been active in the past DaBY publicly solicited residency programs. What kind of time has passed since their last residency, and how has it led to their current activities? This is an opportunity to experience their respective practices. We look forward to your participation.

◆Planning Background

Since its establishment in 2020, Dance Base Yokohama has supported the activities of artists in various ways, including an open call for residency programs. Since its establishment, Dance Base Yokohama has repeatedly asked itself the questions of “how to open dance to society” and “how to have long-lasting relationships with artists.

We have been exploring avenues for continued engagement with artists who have gone through the public call for residencies, even after their stay. Concrete steps have been taken since August 2025, when the first floor space will be newly available for use.

The first floor space is located directly facing the bustling Kitanaka Brick & White. We are starting a new project with Naoyuki Sakai and Taku Yoshida in the hope of utilizing this environment itself, which is adjacent to the city, as a place for artists to practice. Both artists have been practicing dance in different ways to open dance to society, and both have been active in DaBY’s public residency programs in the past.

You can see our past efforts in DaBY from the pages of Naoyuki Sakai’s previous stay (2024 ) and Taku Yoshida’s previous stay (2025 ). We look forward to seeing you there.

◆Outline of work

Naoyuki Sakai Film work “The Orbit of Spirits”
Video screening + public filming
Filming, editing, and performance by Naoyuki Sakai
Running time: 20 min.

The Orbit of Spirits” uses a 360-degree camera that is integrated with the dancers’ bodies, allowing them to move through the city as they film.
As the camera amplifies the motion of the dance, the space and the body are extended and stretched in an animated way, rising up as motion with a scale that is impossible in reality.

In this project, the video “The Orbit of Spirits” will be screened and actually filmed in the venue while dancing using a 360-degree camera, which will be viewed again.
It is an attempt to disturb the norms of the body in a defined urban space by inserting different motions into the actual space.

Taku Yoshida work “Water Organ”
Choreographed and performed by Taku Yoshida
Duration: 30 min.

Water Organ” was created and presented during my residency as an artist and researcher community “PITO” from February to March 2026.
The work is based on an everyday act and uses physical effects to launch a physical expression. It was born out of my thinking about dance expression that does not represent an image through movement.
I am taking this opportunity to dig deeper and brush up.
