Teita Iwabuchi/ New work “The Great Afternoon: the soft machine xxx” Work in Progress
– Dance Base Yokohama International Dance Project “Wings” for the next generation of world-class creators
Dance Base Yokohama (DaBY) will launch a new project “Dance Base Yokohama International Dance Project “Wings” for the next generation of creators who want to spread their wings to the world” in 2024. The six creators selected for the “Wings” project will work together to create works with a view to performing them overseas.
Research and creation by Teita Iwabuchi, a DaBY resident artist who will participate in the “Wings” project, will begin in March 2025 in preparation for a new work. During the work-in-progress, he will share his research with the audience through dance and commentary. This is a time for you to watch the dance and talk about it, without daring to separate the performance and the talk. We hope you will enjoy the process of creation with us.
We look forward to seeing you at this project, in which DaBY resident artists and artists who have been associated with DaBY’s projects and creative activities in the past will participate.
◆Sada Iwabuchi, new work “The Great Afternoon: the soft machine xxx
My first new work in three years is a trio piece. I start from the paradoxical idea that the body is a soft machine with rich and precise mechanisms that have not yet been achieved by technology. Based on the hypothesis that the advanced technology of the body is derived from ancient magic, I will refer to Butoh dancers such as Tatsumi Hijikata, Kazuo Ohno, and Ko Murobushi, traditional dances of Asia, possession, ghosts, Nietzsche, and Tamio Hojo’s “The First Night of Life,” among others. What kind of body will be created by the mixture of these elements? The work will overlap the visible and invisible, the dead and the living, ancient rituals and the contemporary dance floor.
