Dance Base Yokohama (DaBY) invites applications for its 2026 Residency Program from individuals and groups engaged in creative practices, research, or project development involving physical expression. Selected applicants will undertake activities at DaBY’s facilities during Fiscal Year 2026.

Since its establishment under the concept of “opening dance to society,” DaBY has cultivated a space that supports diverse artistic approaches and fosters meaningful encounters between creative practice and the public sphere. In 2025, marking the fifth anniversary of its opening, DaBY expanded its facilities by adding a new studio on the 1st floor, strengthening its connection to the surrounding community and everyday life. This expanded environment signals the next phase in DaBY’s mission.

For the 2026 Residency Program, DaBY welcomes proposals that do not necessarily seek the completion of a finished work, as well as projects that investigate social or regional engagement, experimental creation, or research-focused methodologies. The residency aims to cultivate an environment in which artists, staff, local communities, and visitors may engage with one another at their own pace.

Applicants from across the field of physical expression—including, but not limited to, dance—are encouraged to apply.

◆Requirements
  1. The project must be in its planning or creation phase (works that have already premiered are not eligible).
  2. Individuals or groups ages 18–39. For groups, it is recommended that the core members fall within this age range.
  3. The project/activity must be related to physical expression, regardless of genre. Research, experimentation, and collaborative processes are also eligible.
  4. The project must be feasible based on the submitted proposal, past experiences, and budget plan.
◆Conditions
  1. Activities should possess a social perspective.
Projects should demonstrate an understanding of DaBY’s concept and engage with contemporary performing arts, social contexts, and societal relationships. You are not required to use this residency to create a new work; you can use the time for inquiry, dialogue, and exchange.
  2. Transparency of activities during the residency.
DaBY upholds an open creative environment where creators and staff can communicate freely and safely, regardless of position. In principle, activities during the residency are conducted in the open, allowing observation from the Archive Area. Rehearsals leading up to the final showing should also be made accessible to the extent possible. You may temporarily close the studio—such as during tryouts or when work requires particular focus—which is permitted and does not affect the review. If you anticipate needing closed sessions due to the nature of your project, please indicate this in your application or consult with us in advance. We ask for your cooperation in maintaining a respectful working environment and avoiding putting stress on production and operational staff. Staff may contact you to adjust arrangements when necessary.
  3. Event collaboration at DaBY.
You are required to share your residency outcomes—such as through a work-in-progress, tryout, or presentation—on the final day(s) of your residency. The format may be chosen according to the nature of your project. Studio assignment (1F or 3F) will be determined in consultation during the interview process.
  4. Participation in designated programmes.
You are required to attend seminars organized by DaBY, such as anti-harassment sessions and legal seminars, when applicable.
  5. Distribution of relevant information.
Please cooperate with DaBY in promoting your residency activities through social media and other platforms.
  6. Credits.
For your website and any presentations or performances outside DaBY, please include the statement: “Participant of the 2026/2027 DaBY Residency Programme.” Additionally, works created through this residency should include the following credit: Residency Programme Support: Dance Base Yokohama (Subject to change depending on the scope of support.)
