& Dance Tech” is an ongoing series of genre-less workshops for dancers, curated by DaBY choreographer in residence Saori Hala.
Each workshop, with a different instructor and theme, will explore techniques for dancers to interpret and incorporate the complex media surrounding dance expression, such as words, space, and music, into their own expression.
The first half of Vol. 1 is Taichi Yamagata’s “Words and Dance: Direction of Words and Body. Dance works in which speech is performed on stage are no longer rare in Japan. This class is for those who want to challenge or further hone their skills in handling words as dancers.
The second half of the program is “Dance with Space, Dance with Place” by Saori Hara. Hara, who has been continuously performing site-specific works, will share methods for creating a relationship between space and the body. This class is for those interested in creating works in special non-theatrical spaces and improvisation methods.

◆Program Outline
Words and Dance: Words and Dance: The Direction of Words and the Direction of the Body” Instructor: Taichi Yamagata
The seen happening on the stage. How does being seen and seeing on stage affect the body? How does seeing and being seen on stage affect our bodies? How is our body different on the stage from the way it is in everyday life? Become others. Becoming others, or trying to become others. In this process, there are many hints for deeper observation of your own body. Consciously bring up on stage the unconscious and attractive body of everyday life. Not sensitively, but more concretely. I hope this workshop will be an opportunity for you to encounter your own body again while having fun. Please feel free to participate. (Taichi Yamagata)
