Dance for Pleasure
I’ll turn it into a dance work.
Rather than share my concept in non-physical terms, I make my ideas concrete by drawing them deeply into the movement itself, and in so doing create works in which an individuality that transcends reason unconsciously appears. My ideas are renewed each time I practice.
I’m interested in the conflict between dancers’ thoughts and bodies, and so my work simply consists of providing a time and place for this to occur. The lead role is always the relationship between the dancers’ bodies and thoughts.
The motive preceding the movement is in the relating.
The theme of this work is “unison” (when multiple dancers perform the same movements).
For many years, I felt somewhat uneasy about dancing in unison to music. About how we stop forming autonomous connections when we synchronize with our surroundings. I’d wonder whether uniformity should really be a pleasant thing. Whether watching it should make us feel good.
But isn’t it possible to slip into a groove by trying to harmonize without losing a sense of incongruity, of discrepancy? The groove is what matters to me, more than dancing in perfect order with the arrangements and angles and timing all integrated. And what I’m aiming for is a group of dancers who, though not consistent in this way, can maintain the flexibility and generosity to move in the same direction.
Relationships are fascinating things, forever being renewed, always unstable and vulnerable, perpetually part of a process. The power to overcome the stagnation of thought and the hardening of received ideas is founded in fear and love and creativity.
