Kota Yamazaki Dance Showcase + Presentation
PART I: A WIP showing of excerpted materials from Shadows Creep In From One-foot Under A Table- a new dance by Tokyo/NY-based choreographer Kota Yamazaki. The new work will premiere at BankART Station in Yokohama on Dec 28-30, 2022. Re-imagining and taking inspirations from Tatsumi Hijikata’s Hosotan, Yamazaki explores multi-dimensionality of darkness of body. From an abandoned, aging or marginalized body to slimy, marshy and alien-like beings, this work dives into a journey of opening up the depth of the body of darkness. *This new work includes choreographic materials from I, Ghost, the, Other(self) or You, which was originally presented at DaBY’s Tryout program as part of YAPM 2021. PART II: A talk by Kota Yamazaki, about Yamazaki’s relationship to and current thoughts on (and beyond) Tatsumi Hijikata’s “dance of darkness.” Yamazaki, as an artist who has passed through “dance of darkness,” questions what can be passed down to artists of the future generations.
