Darren Johnston / PORTAL Choreographic and Spatial Research Residency
◆Outline
PORTAL is an evolving body of work that explores the transition between virtual and physical reality through movement, sound, light, and architectural space. The work explores the emergence of virtual and immaterial states into physical experiences.
Darren Johnston (choreographer, director, mixed media artist) is a resident at Zaha Hadid Architects, a London-based architecture firm founded by world-renowned architect Zaha Hadid in 1980. Hadid Architects, a London-based architecture firm founded in 1980 by world-renowned architect Zaha Hadid. While building abstract environments where movement data and architecture intersect, he continues to research how virtual, insubstantial experiences can be transformed into tangible forms.
The residency at Dance Base Yokohama focuses on physical and virtual choreography, digital and physical environments, and spatial acoustic experimentation to create new installation and performance concepts. Inspired by ritual structures, contemplative practices, contemporary acoustic experience spaces, and Japanese partners such as HOSOO in Kyoto, this project explores “generative AI” as a common thread connecting virtual and physical design and experience forms.
This project will be held as an exchange with the Portal Project, which will premiere at Sadler’s Wells.
