In 2024, Dance Base Yokohama (DaBY) launched “Wings”: International Dance Project by Dance Base Yokohama for Emerging Creators, utilizing the Agency for Cultural Affairs’ “Fund for Strengthening the Infrastructure for Cultural and Artistic Activities.” Together with the six groups of creators selected for the “Wings” project, we have been creating and staging works with a view toward international performances.
In November 2026, two works created through “Wings” will be presented at CINARS, one of the world’s largest performing arts events.
The works are Teita Iwabuchi’s The Great Afternoon: the soft machine xxx and Ayaka Ono Akira Nakazawa Spacenotblank’s Dance Piece No. 3: Naoya Shiga “At Kinosaki”.
Both works premiered at the Aichi Prefectural Art Theater in October 2025, were presented at YPAM Exchange in December of the same year, and have since undergone further performances, including at Iwaki Performing Arts Center Alios (Dance Piece No. 3: Naoya Shiga “At Kinosaki” only), and re-creation. These will be their first performances outside Japan.
During CINARS, as part of “Japan at CINARS 2026,” we will also hold a pitch session and a booth together with the Aichi Prefectural Art Theater, the Japan Council of Public Theaters and Halls, and YPAM, expanding opportunities to introduce the works and to network.
Please look forward to the future development of each “Wings” work.

■Teita Iwabuchi, The Great Afternoon: the soft machine xxx
Deeply influenced by the late Ko Murobushi, Teita Iwabuchi developed the “ecstatic body theory” from butoh, martial arts, and Lao Tzu. Together with two dancers, he delves into the viscera of butoh.
The vocalizations that characterize this work—groans, screams, broken breaths—leak out from inside the body before they become words, laying bare even the mechanism that moves the body.
From voice to movement. From movement to voice. This back-and-forth passes from body to body with a delay, creating feedback that saturates the space.

■Ayaka Ono Akira Nakazawa Spacenotblank, Dance Piece No. 3: Naoya Shiga “At Kinosaki”
Ayaka Ono Akira Nakazawa Spacenotblank transform Naoya Shiga’s 1917 short story “At Kinosaki” into a wordless dance work about death and life, recovery, and inheritance.
Retracing the process by which Shiga turned his experience in Kinosaki into literature, they reconstruct the landscapes and silences of Kinosaki as choreography through “physical catharsis,” their own choreographic mechanism that generates and transforms movement and hands it on from body to body.
