“Wings”: International Dance Project by Dance Base Yokohama for Emerging Creators

In 2024, Dance Base Yokohama (DaBY) launched the “Wings”: International Dance Project by Dance Base Yokohama for Emerging Creators, utilizing funding from the Agency for Cultural Affairs’ “Fund for Strengthening the Infrastructure for Cultural and Artistic Activities.”Together with the six groups of creators selected for the “Wings” project , we have been creating and staging works with a view toward international performances.

It has been announced that the international premiere of *R/evolution(s)*, directed and choreographed by Conan Amok, will take place in August 2026 at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the world’s largest performing arts festival.
This production is being realized as part of an exchange program between the two dance houses, based on an international partnership with Dance Base, Scotland’s national dance center. During the Fringe, a total of 12 performances will be held at Dance Base (*).
Following its premiere at the Aichi Prefectural Art Theater in October 2025 and a performance at YPAM Exchange in December of the same year, the production will now be presented at one of the world’s leading arts festivals. We hope this performance will serve as a stepping stone to further opportunities for international expansion. Please look forward to the Edinburgh performances and the future developments of the various “Wings” works.

*As part of this partnership, we plan to host a residency at DaBY for an artist from Scotland in October 2026.

◆Outline of work

This production brings together Ame, who honed her craft at Daikamelkan—one of Japan’s leading butoh companies—and four contemporary dancers with diverse backgrounds, as they take on the challenge of carrying forward the legacy of butoh while reinventing its form for the modern era.Conan Amok, who studied sculpture at an art university and gained many years of experience with the Butoh company Da Rakudakan, engages in the preservation and reinterpretation of Butoh using her unique dance method, “Multi Layered Body,” which is based on phenomenology and a sculptural perspective. In this work, she began the creative process by taking the dual meanings of “Revolution”—“orbital motion” and “transformation”—as her starting point. Focusing on the materiality of the body, she projects“permanence and discontinuity,” “substitution,” “movement,” and “transformation” onto the body, creating refined, solid movements. Collaborating with dancers from diverse backgrounds outside of Butoh, she presents new possibilities for the art form.
