Dance Base Yokohama

Dapheny Chen, “Body of Work,” Work in Progress

Date: 2024/6/23(Sun) 14:00-15:30
Venue: Dance Base Yokohama

This performance is not just a dance. It is a dialogue that challenges the capitalist framework’s tendency to undervalue the contributions of artists by questioning, introspecting, and critiquing the labor of cultural workers. By examining dance as a labor-intensive form of expression, we highlight the multifaceted nature of dance works and advocate for the wider recognition of dance as a profession. We also promote equitable labor practices to encourage a sustainable and inclusive future for the arts.
What is the future of equitable labor practices in the arts?
How can we reshape the narrative to recognize artists as an integral part of it?

-Dapheny Chen

◆Artist Message

This sharing is a work in progress. The work never truly ends and it will continue to develop in iterations that reflect the change in time and state. This iteration is developed in collaboration with the performers and very much devised by the collected interviews.

I ask each of you to approach the work with your own encounters, experiences and histories. As such to allow your own interpretation to serve as a point of entry for conversation and knowledge for change.

◆Artist Profile

Dapheny Chen

Independent dance artist who moves between the roles of choreographer, performer, educator, and manager.
She is interested in the provocation, connection, and criticality that comes from creating and viewing dance. Moving away from traditional dance training, she examines socio-political ideologies and explores the possibilities of contemporary dance. Her practice embraces the multifaceted nature of choreography and dance as it changes with time and circumstance. Acknowledging the fluid and transient nature of the creative process, she disrupts previous formal definitions in order to create new experiences. She has danced with Ah Hock and Peng You (2004), L.A. Dance Connection (2003-2008), Frontier Danceland (2010-2011), and Re:Dance Theatre (2012-2015). Her work has been presented at the Esplanade dans Festival, Huayi Chinese Festival of Arts, NUS Exon-Mobil Campus Concert, Prisma Festival Panama, WDA Asia Pacific Seoul, Cont. act Contemporary Dance Festival, and Dance Nucleus’ VECTOR. She holds a Master’s degree in Arts and Cultural Leadership.
