Study for Self/ portrait 2020,” a dance performance by Kenta Koyurugi, a longtime member of the Netherlands’ leading contemporary dance company Netherlands Dance Theater (NDT) and currently a dance evangelist at Dance Base Yokohama (DaBY), will be performed at the residence of the Royal Netherlands Ambassador to Japan. portrait 2020″ will be performed at the official residence of the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Japan. The dance performance will make full use of the space of the Dutch Ambassador’s Residence, which is not usually open to the public, and will vividly portray a portrait painted by the body.
The work to be performed this time will be reborn in a different form as a video work in collaboration with sound designer Yasuhiro Morinaga. The collaboration between Mr. Morinaga and Kenta Komori, who picks up the smallest physical movements that would normally be overlooked from the unique perspective of a sound designer, will be released as a video work by the end of this year.
Royal Netherlands Embassy Statements
The Royal Netherlands Embassy is committed to the development of the contemporary dance scene in Japan, and the establishment of Dance Base Yokohama (DaBY) is a major step forward in the promotion of contemporary dance. It is also significant that DaBY was established in Yokohama after the history of the Netherland Dance Theater’s (NDT) first performance in Japan in 13 years at Kanagawa Kenmin Hall and Aichi Arts Theatre in 2019. The Embassy would have liked to invite dancers from NDT, which celebrated its 60th anniversary this year, but unfortunately this is not possible under the current circumstances.
Therefore, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands congratulates Kenta Komori, Dance Evangelist of DaBY, the first Japanese male to join DaBY and Nederland Dance Theater 1 (NDT 1), for opening its doors and for establishing DaBY and for his support of the contemporary dance scene in these difficult times. We will support the contemporary dance scene in this difficult situation. We are very excited to have Mr. Komori, a successful Dutch goodwill ambassador who has had a variety of experiences in the Netherlands, collaborate with the 90 year old ambassador’s residence of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. We hope that his performance will inspire many people and lead to an exchange of contemporary dance between Japan and the Netherlands.
Peter van der Vliet, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands
