Language and the Body” Exploration Lab
~The Trance of the Body: Thinking with the Body and the Mind. Dance from the viewpoint of the body.”
Choreographer and dancer Teita Iwabuchi will hold a study session at Dance Base Yokohama (DaBY).
◆ ecstatic body theory
Body view is one’s view of one’s body, meaning how one’s body sees the world. The view of the body is created by the culture of the land, the time period, and personal experience. What kind of body view and how one views the world, if one’s body changes, one’s view of the world changes, and how one views the world becomes a dance and a work of art. The modern view of the body is that the body’s presence has diminished due to fewer opportunities to use the body in daily life, and that the body has become detached from the long history and culture of the past. In Japan, in particular, I feel this trend is very strong. This workshop will share Teita Iwabuchi’s theory of the body, which explores the body from the East and West, from the history of Butoh, martial arts, folk art philosophy, living things, plants, and the human body, and draws out the rich wisdom and power that the body inherently possesses as a living creature.
The body is divided into five layers, expanding from the body of the entity to the depths of the body and the space created by the body.
Each session includes bodywork and lectures on one or two layers. Single sessions can be taken, but we recommend attending all sessions.
<Extra Class
In the morning, Iwabuchi will hold a basic training class that he usually gives. This class is free of charge for those who attend the Bodywork & Lecture class in the afternoon.
<The origin of the theory of the ecstatic body
Lao Tzu, Chapter 14.
When you see it, but do not see it, it is called “faint. Hear it but do not hear it, and it is called rare. Circulate it but do not obtain it, and it is called barbarian. The three cannot be summed up; they are therefore mixed together as one. The one is not easy at the top, but not easy at the bottom. This is what is called the form of nothingness, or the elephant of nothingness. This is what is called ecstasy. Follow it and you will not see what follows, greet it and you will not see its head. If you follow the path of the present, and thus know the things of the present, you will also know the beginning of the past. This is what is called the Tao Te Ching.
