Words and Bodies” Exploration Lab
~”Ecstatic Bodily Theory: Thinking with the Body and the Mind. Dance from the viewpoint of the body.”
Choreographer and dancer Teita Iwabuchi will hold a study session at Dance Base Yokohama (DaBY).
◆ ecstatic body theory
Body view is one’s view of one’s body, meaning how one’s body sees the world. The view of the body is created by the culture of the land, the time period, and personal experience. What kind of body view and how one views the world, if one’s body changes, one’s view of the world changes, and how one views the world becomes a dance and a work of art. The modern view of the body is that the body’s presence has diminished due to fewer opportunities to use the body in daily life, and that the body has become detached from the long history and culture of the past. In Japan, in particular, I feel this trend is very strong. This workshop will share Teita Iwabuchi’s theory of the body, which explores the body from the East and West, from the history of Butoh, martial arts, folk art philosophy, living things, plants, and the human body, and draws out the abundant wisdom and power that the body inherently possesses as a living being.
The body is divided into five layers, expanding from the actual body to the depths of the body and the space created by the body.
Bodywork and lectures will be given on one or two layers at a time. Single classes are also available, but we recommend attending all classes.
<Extra Class>
In the morning, Iwabuchi will hold his usual basic training class. This class is free of charge for those who attend the Bodywork & Lectures in the afternoon.
<Origin of Ecstatic Body Theory>
“Lao Tzu” Chapter 14
“Seeing this but not seeing it, I call it micro. Hear but do not hear, it is called “rare. If you see it and do not see it, it is called “faint. The three should not be packed together; they should therefore be blended together as one. The one is not easy at the top, but not easy at the bottom. This is what is called the form of nothingness, or the elephant of nothingness. This is what I call ecstasy. Follow it and do not look after it, greet it and do not look at its head. If you follow the path of the present, and thus know the things of the present, you will also know the beginning of the past. This is what is called the Tao Te Ching.
