“Wings”: International Dance Project by Dance Base Yokohama for Emerging Creators
Dance Base Yokohama (DaBY) will launch “Wings”: International Dance Project by Dance Base Yokohama for Emerging Creators in 2024, utilizing the Fund for Strengthening the Foundations of Cultural and Artistic Activities by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. Wings” is an international dance project for the next generation of creators who are ready to take their talents to the world. The six creators selected for the “Wings” project have been working together to create works with a view to performing them overseas.
Toranan Ame and Teita Iwabuchi will each conduct the first stage of creation and work-in-progress in March 2025. For Ame’s choreography “R/evolution(s),” four dancers have been selected after workshop auditions in March.
Both works will now undergo a second work-in-progress after three weeks of intensive creation starting in June.

The theme of the exhibition is “Reinterpretation of the physical senses in the modern age. Using his original butoh technique “Multi Layered Body” as a basis, he extracts “permanence/disconnection, movement, replacement, and transformation” from the phenomenon of “orbital rotation,” overlapping and amplifying multiple aspects, both apparent and latent, of the subject. In reinterpreting Butoh, the foundation of his work, in his own unique way, Amok has selected dancers with diverse backgrounds other than Butoh. We can expect a drama of immediacy that will lead to the presentation of new budding possibilities and innovation. Conan Amok

I will start with the paradoxical idea that the body is a soft machine with rich and precise mechanisms that technology has yet to achieve. Based on the hypothesis that the advanced technology possessed by the body is derived from ancient magic, I will refer to Butoh dancers such as Tatsumi Hijikata, Kazuo Ohno, and Ko Murobushi, traditional dances of Asia, possession, ghosts, Nietzsche, Tamio Hojo’s “The First Night of Life,” and so on. What kind of body will be created by the mixture of these elements? The visible and invisible, the dead and the living, ancient rituals and the contemporary dance floor will overlap in this work.
