Kota Yamazaki’s New Project “Dance Teleportation
———————
Basically, a choreographer and dancer create a work by sharing a place and time. Now that this is no longer possible, how can a choreographer establish a relationship with a dancer to create a work? We have named this challenge “Dance Teleportation” in the sense of exploring the nature of dance that transcends both place and time.
The choreographer is constantly imagining things for the dancer, but the joy when the dancer exceeds the choreographer’s thinking and imagination is immeasurable. In considering this relationship, and in thinking of a method that can be practiced in the current situation, this “dance teleportation” emerged.
First, a dialogue is held with each dancer, and the choreographer spells out words from what is inspired. The dancers take those words and respond to the choreographer in some means or movement. In the same way, the dancers can communicate with each other. I thought it would be possible to launch a work from this new form of communication and collaboration. I believe that a new form of performance could be realized by moving the whole process in the direction of creating works that are independent, intimate, and interlocking in their relationship and communication, yet invisible. Perhaps it will involve means other than dance and physical movement alone.
The reality that the DaBY-sponsored site-specific dance has been canceled this time led us to this form of performance when we wondered what kind of performance could coexist with the current situation of fighting the new coronavirus. How it will develop is unknown. I would be happy if you could witness this new process.
