Dance Base Yokohama

Workshop related to Kota Yamazaki’s “Thin Paper, Autonomous Synapses, Nomads, Tokyo (do)

Sunday, September 22, 2024 14:00 – 19:30 @ Dance Base Yokohama

Footnote New Zealand Dance and Kota Yam azaki will hold a workshop by Kota Yamazaki in preparation for the performance of the collaborative dance project “Thin Paper, Autonomous Synapse, Nomads, Tokyo (to be)”. Please come and join us.

◆Class Outline

Release Techniques Class

This class is a European release technique. The first step is conversation. The conversation is free to include recent events and current feelings, and by sharing each person’s thoughts, a sense of commonality is already created there. The movement begins with the basics of the release technique, which also includes floor movement and the movement of the floor. At the center, we will develop into a movement that uses structure and freedom to move and release the whole body in a flowing way. (Intermediate level class)

Improvisation Class

Dance in “Recognition and Sensation” encourages spontaneous dance by looking at objects, spaces, and people. Recognition is the act of looking at the objects, people, and space around you and recognizing a place by its lines, qualities, colors, history, background, etc. Sensation is the movement that spontaneously arises from the senses by looking at them. These are movements based almost entirely on the senses, but sometimes recognition gives time to think, and time is needed to build the movement. One can also construct imaginary lines from perceptions, as in Forsythe’s Improvisation Technology, and build movements against these lines. The sensory movement accepts it and overcomes it. The dance that emerges from the senses can also create a desire for it, which can lead to a new movement. Gradually, everyone in this class will be able to communicate with each other physically (no previous dance experience is necessary). (No dance experience necessary)

Butoh Technique Class

This class is painful. However, since it is an Aikido ukemi technique, it does not hurt, but there will be a loud noise, so please do not be surprised. However, you will hit your body against the floor, so please refrain from doing this class if you are old. I myself am already old. I am already old myself, and I also vocalize. The reason for this kind of practice is the physicality of coping with nature. By experiencing a simulated moment of crisis, even if only for a moment, you will discover the living energy of your body, which you had originally forgotten. And that is where Butoh begins. (No dance experience is necessary, but older students are not allowed to take this class.)
